The crew stops to visit a planet, where, on the surface, is a memorial to the Jacaceans. Provided are goggles with which the crew can look through a tear in time, back into the past, and see what happened. John encourages Stark to have a look, but Stark sees only death and killing and ends up transporting them back to the time of the war between the Jacaceans and the Veneks. They end up helping during the battle and completely change the course of events. John insists that even though he and Aeryn's pulse rifles are working, they should not use them.

John finds that they have captured General Grynes, of the Veneks. Stark looks for the rip in time and finds one. They send Jool back, but she finds that things are not like they were when they left. Stark feels millions of dead souls that he did not feel the first time he encountered the tear, and isn't able to hold onto the tear to allow the others through. Pilot announces to Chiana, Jool and Rygel that the transmission vernacular has changed. Not much later, the planet surface becomes war raged having a fraction of the population as before.

John tries to set the General free, but a Jacacean kills him before he can get back to his troop and work out a peace. The second in command sends back a transmission, saying they have sealed their fates by sending the General back not only dead, but in the nurses' cloths. Having found out it was John's idea to free the general, the Jacacean's chain him to a statue.

Dacon, a hero that Aeryn was taught about in school, turns out to be little more than a cook who had command thrust on him. She must encourage him to send a message back to the Veneks about how they were sorry for the death of the general and only wanted peace, knowing that he would die, but feeling this would return them to the time line. It does not. The planet, on the other side of time, the planet is barren, with no microbial chemistry.

Stark can no longer find any sign of the tear. The Veneks attack. John begs Aeryn to let him go. She allows it on the basis that he let them use their pulse rifles. The planet on the other side has now vanished. With all the combined efforts, they send the Veneks into retreat.

Stark now sees a tear re-appear and he no longer feels the deaths that he did before. On the other side, the memorial remains, and everything seems to have returned to normal. However, they discover that the Veneks killed all the Jacaceans over the fact that they recognized the pulse rifles, and the leader could not tell them where the people went, who had them.
